This is an ultra-rare eurypterid fossil. It is a distinct Pterygotus macrophthalmus from the Silurian of New York. Eurypterids are some of the most unusual arthropods in the fossil record - they were thought to be one of the first aquatic animals to explore onto land. This amazing fossil has the head, body, and wide, fan tail intact and well displayed. The Pterygotus has a paddle and many ''walking arms'' preserved, which is quite unusual. There is also a long, disarticulated claw right above the head - claws are the defining feature of this type of Eurypterid! The extinct arthropod is wonderfully centered on the rectangular block of waterlime. This is a very collectible Pterygotus Eurypterid fossil that is over 100 times rarer than a Eurypterus Eurypterid.
